INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR
KITTY COTTAGE: TM
CLEANING:
The Kitty Cottage is MOISTURE RESISTANT so it may be wiped with a damp cloth ~ water only ~ no chemicals!
CHANGING LITTER:
To clean the litter box, simply lift the Kitty Cottage off and set it aside. Lift the cottage from the underside of the gable
ends (pointed part above attic door ~ wood trim) or place hands in the attic door openings or portals (where cat enters and
exits). Place over litter box when done cleaning. Remove chimney when lifting Kitty Cottage, to prevent it from falling
off.
STORAGE SPACE:
The "attic" may be used to store litter box tools, accessories, or kitty's toys. It is not designed as a "playroom" as the
attic floor will not tolerate excessive weight.
AIR FRESHENER:
The chimney is repositionable. A scented tea candle (included) or liquid potpourri may be placed within the chamber. Do
not move candle while burning or if wax is hot. As with any candle, NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED. The chimney
may be washed with soap and water if necessary. Do not place in dishwasher.
CARBON FILTER PAD:
Makes litter box ODORLESS!!
Your Kitty Cottage comes with a carbon filter pad. It will last approximately 3-6 months. It is to be placed on the underside
of the attic floor (ceiling of interior). To install, tilt the Kitty Cottage on its end (where cat enters). Pull tabs off
of Velcro coins and position filter in the center of the ceiling. GENTLY press on the corners where Velcro coins are located.
It is best to press with one hand on the filter pad and the other hand on the topside of attic floor for support. Some carbon
particles may fall off of the pad ~ this is normal. To replace filter, gently remove old filter. The Velcro coins will remain.
Line up new filter with the Velcro coins and gently press into place. The dark side of the filter should be facing down(facing
litter box). To REORDER carbon filter pads, call the number provided on the attic door (label attached). You may also email
us by visiting our web site. Replacement filters are $3.00 each. Your new carbon filter pad will come in a sealed bag.
Do not open until ready to use as it will "activate" once opened.
PORTAL FLAPS:
The portal flaps are removable. If your cat is not used to them, he/she can easily be trained in a couple of days. Cats
are inquisitive by nature so be patient ~ DON'T PUSH YOUR CAT THROUGH! Sit next to the Kitty Cottage with your cat. Push
the flap through and let your cat start to enter. As he/she gets about 1/2 way through, let go of the flap. The feeling
of the flap on the cat's back is what may startle the cat. Once in, let your cat explore and get comfortable. Let your cat
see you through the flap. Gently reassure your cat through this process. You will have to repeat the process when your cat
decides to exit(pull flap out towards you). Use praise and positive rewards. NEVER USE NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT! Your cat
will soon get the idea that he has to use his nose and/or paws to push the flap open. The main thing is to be relaxed with
the process of training. Cats are intelligent ~ they catch on quickly. If you would rather not use the flaps, simply remove.
They are attached with Velcro. Keeping the flaps on will also help to prevent dogs (if you own one) from getting into the
litter box. **DO NOT LET SMALL CHILDREN OR BABIES PUT THEIR HEAD THROUGH THE PORTAL OPENING.
DOWEL FEET:
Four "feet" are included with your Kitty Cottage. The "feet" fit in the holes located on the bottom of the frame. Some people
prefer their Kitty Cottage to be "off" the floor. This is handy if you want to use a "tracking mat." Slide mat under
the cottage and up against the litter box, or, if you don't use the "feet", place the tracking mat directly outside the cottage.
If you have a cat that loves to scatter the litter, it may be best not to use the feet.
CAT PANS/LITTER BOXES:
The Kitty Cottage is designed for use with a SHALLOW litter box. If your current litter box is not too deep, but comes above
the entrance portal, you can use the "feet" to raise the Kitty Cottage a bit. HARTZ makes a shallow litter box that is just
right. You can find them at any Publix store. (FLA.)
KITTY LITTER:
Because the carbon filter pad is so EFFECTIVE, you may forget to change your litter box. So remember, just because you don't
smell anything, doesn't mean there's nothing in the box! You will no longer need to purchase the more expensive "scented"
litter ~ any cheap brand will do. Cats don't like the scented brands anyway!
PLACEMENT OF YOUR KITTY COTTAGE:
You may place your Kitty Cottage in any room with pride. Because of the design of the cottage you have many options on how
it may be placed. You can place it so that both portals are accessible, allowing for separate entrance and exit routes, or
just one portal exposed.
